Abstract․ The problem of effective communication within law enforcement systems has become increasingly significant, especially as operational tasks, international cooperation, and cybercrime investigation demand higher linguistic competence. It is known that the integration of English into policing practices enhances both professional efficiency and institutional adaptability. In modern conditions, where security threats often transcend national borders, English proficiency functions not merely as a communicative tool but as a strategic component of institutional capacity-building.
This research work is dedicated to examining the multifaceted role of English in law enforcement, with a specific focus on its expanding function within the police sector. The article explores the methodological, operational and educational dimensions of the English language application in policing. The article provides an in-depth analysis of language training strategies for police officers, emphasizing the need for structured, competency-based, and profession-oriented English instruction. Furthermore, the study presents the applicability of English in cybercrime investigation, where access to international databases, cross-border information exchange and cooperation with foreign agencies require specialized linguistic preparedness. In its turn, the article also highlights the impact of the English language skills on the effectiveness of operational and crisis communication and rapid information processing during field operations.
The methodological basis of this research is a comparative and analytical approach supported by thematic literature review, synthesis of international standards, and examination of best practices in police education. The authors examine the evolution of linguistic policies within law enforcement institutions and the mechanisms through which the English language competencies influence professional decision-making and situational responsiveness.
The article also analyzes theoretical approaches to the professionalization of linguistic training in police education, identifying core structural elements necessary for curriculum modernization. Taking into account the growing demand for specialized communication skills, the study substantiates the argument that English has transformed into an operational resource for improving investigative accuracy, coordination and institutional transparency.
Given these facts, the article justifies the point of view that the English language competence must be institutionalized as a mandatory and measurable component of law enforcement training. The solution to the problem is developing multilayer certification mechanisms, integrating applied English modules into investigative and cyber units, and ensuring systemic cooperation between national and international training centers. The article also offers several policy-oriented recommendations aimed at enhancing the linguistic capacity of police personnel.
Therefore, the conclusions and the above-mentioned proposals are aimed at reinforcing the professional readiness of law enforcement officers, strengthening international cooperation and modernizing the language-teaching ecosystem within policing institutions. The study demonstrates that the expansion of the English language functions in policing is not only relevant but strategically essential for the effective performance of law enforcement agencies in the contemporary security environment.
Key words: English for specific purposes (ESP), policing, law enforcement bodies, future perspectives, language, operational communication, commands.
