Abstract․ The article covers the causal framework of computer theft in the Republic of Armenia by means of identifying the general and specific factors that contribute to its commission, latency, and individual criminal behavior. General factors include social, economic, and other circumstances that influence crime as a whole. Specific factors are associated with the rapid development and widespread use of information and communication technologies, the emergence of new technologies such as the artificial intelligence, the expansion of online banking services, and the limited technical capacities of law enforcement agencies.
Particular attention is paid to the factors determining the latency of computer theft, including the concealed and technologically complex nature of such offenses, which complicates their detection, as well as victims’ and witnesses’ skepticism regarding crime disclosure, distrust of law enforcement agencies, insufficient legal awareness, and reluctance to acquire a procedural status.
The analysis of the motivational sphere indicates that computer theft is predominantly driven by self-interest, however, motives such as self-actualization, desire to enhance personal skills, and curiosity are also observed. The findings of the study may be applied in the development and the implementation of general, special, and individual measures aimed at preventing computer theft and reducing its latency.
Keywords: computer theft, causal framework, factors.
