Abstract. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it examines the challenges in modern patrolling from a linguistic perspective with regard to verbal and nonverbal communication, cultural constraints and linguistic performance under stress. Second, it conceptualizes the term “professional linguistic and communicative competence of a patrol officer” in order to redefine the law enforcement linguistic training agenda.
Key words: linguistic competence, communicative competence, cross-cultural constraints, language mastery, body language, patrolling, society, skills.
